Discraft has the best variety of midranges on the market. The Buzzz may very well be the most popular midrange of all time. The Zone is incredibly popular amongst pros and amateurs alike, and the Meteor and Comet are classic options that have stood the test of time.

Discraft Discs Origin and History

Discraft's story began in 1979, when Jim Kenner (PDGA #292) and the late Gail McColl (PDGA #240) founded the company in Westland, Michigan. Now based out of Wixom, MI, Discraft has long been a manufacturing powerhouse of all types of flying discs. 

Golf discs are only a portion of Discraft's business. The company is deeply rooted in all forms of flying disc sports. Their signature product is the 175-gram Ultrastar, which is the only disc that is USA Ultimate Championship Series Approved by the Ultimate Players Association. They also make the discs used for Freestyle competitions. 

Through the 1990s and 2000s, Discraft's business grew steadily along with the disc sports world. Through the early days of disc golf, they were second only to the California-based Innova Discs as the dominant manufacturer. 

Kenner is well-known as a great innovator in disc manufacturing, as he developed classic molds like the Buzzz, Challenger, and Cyclone, along with cutting-edge plastic blends such as Z-line and ESP. With Kenner's primary focus on production quality, Discraft developed a reputation for consistency and reliability.

The company's marketing stagnated a bit through the 2010s, as their most famous sponsored pro, 3-time World Champion Nate Doss, retired from the sport. Meanwhile, new companies like Dynamic Discs, Discmania, and Prodigy experienced greater growth and exposure. The playing field was starting to level off, and Discraft fell behind. 

It's not hyperbole to say that outside of their famous midrange the Buzzz, Discraft became a bit of an afterthought in the disc golf scene. That all changed in November of 2018, when Paul McBeth, 6-time World Champion and easily the most famous disc golfer in the world, signed a record-breaking contract with the company.

A flurry of high-profile signings followed, punctuated by 5-time Women's World Champion Paige Pierce committing a deal in November 2019. Another key piece was signing Brodie Smith, a former Ultimate player with a massive social media following. 

Seemingly overnight, Team Discraft had the most star-studded lineup in the sport. They started churning out new molds and plastics around their new players, including signature lines around their two World Champions. It didn't take long for Discraft to return to its role as a titan of the industry.

They are longtime title sponsors of many prominent disc golf tournaments, including the Memorial in Arizona, the Ledgestone Open in Illinois, and the Great Lakes Open in their home state. In addition to their extensive selection, Discraft also produces the DGA (Disc Golf Association) line of golf discs. DGA is a separate brand that uses Discraft's manufacturing facilities.
